Why The Causes Of Depression Need To Be More Deeply Understood

Causes of depression are so hard to quantify that science is spending large budgets on very deep searches to try to find the answer. As of now, no definitive conclusions have been reached, although it is clear that genetics does play a significant role. As well as actual causes, there are also aggravating factors. These would not be enough to cause depression in their own right, but they can certainly worsen an already existing condition and make it harder to live with. So far, science has managed to identify critical hormones which need to present in the brain for the patient not to be depressed.

Identifying depression purely by observing the patient has proven to be a virtually impossible task. There is often no discernible difference in the behavior of someone who has a short term life crisis they need to work their way through, and someone who is genuinely suffering from clinical depression. It is only when a patient begins exhibiting indifference to something which they were previously greatly interested in that observers can be sure there is a deeper problem.

While science has yet to draw any definitive conclusions as to how depression occurs, it can offer many pointers to the factors which can aggravate it and cause it to worsen. One of the worst reducers of mood and morale is artificial light, and a continued absence of the full spectrum of light from the natural world. This can be countered by spending more time outside, or by using full spectrum lighting inside. The modern food processing industry also adds a large number of unnatural substances to food, many of which can cause a depressive reaction.

The progress which science has so far managed to make is in relation to hormones which the brain needs to maintain a high mood. It is more than likely that many of the depression cases which were seemingly inexplicable in the past were down to these hormones not being present. Now, it is possible to artificially stimulate these hormones, and lessen the feelings of depression. This is definitely an area in which more research needs to be concentrated, as there is a possibility of discovering causes, and providing solutions.

Any future research into the causes of depression needs to concentrate on hormonal causes and on genetics. There is every possibility that further research will identify areas where hormone therapy can make a significant difference, as well as areas where there is an inherent genetic issue. These will be far more difficult to deal with. What is abundantly clear is that attempting to diagnose depression by observation is fundamentally futile, and that tests carried out using scientific measuring equipment will be needed to allow identification of the problem at a far earlier stage. This will be greatest benefit of a deeper understanding of the causes of depression.
