Why Clinical Depression Is So Difficult To Diagnose

Clinical depression is a term which actually has no objective definition, but it is constantly applied to a low feeling which persists even when there is no apparent reason for it. It is very hard to define the exact stage when a feeling of despair becomes actual sustained depression, and that makes the condition as a whole hard to diagnose. There are treatments which should be applied in all cases of depression, whether they are clinically defined or not. These are the natural treatments which have no risks or side effects, and which benefit everyone.

When the question is asked, "What is clinical depression?", the simple truth is that no-one, not even the greatest university expert on the subject, can give a totally accurate answer. The basic nature of the disease is well enough known, but the dividing line between simply feeling down and being clinically depressed is not absolute. The best guide which can be given is that depression starts when an individual feels low morale for no discernible reason. This often occurs over a long period of time.

The treatment of depression can often be delayed because of the difficulty in diagnosing the condition, even if there are concerned family members who want to help. This delay can allow some of the problems to develop which can easily become a vicious circle. These are the so-called "comforts" which the sufferer uses to cope with depression, but which actually make the condition worse. Cigarette smoking, drug abuse and alcohol all have the potential to make the condition far worse than it otherwise needs to be.

Once the condition is diagnosed as being clinical by those who can assess it properly, it can be treated with prescription drugs. Whether this should happen is hard to assess, as the results from drug therapy vary so greatly. This is true even when the conditions exhibit very similar symptoms. A lot more research will be needed before we can reach the stage of being able to predict the results of common drug treatments. The best that can be done is to give the treatment a try, and supervise it so that it can be quickly stopped if it is having unwanted side effects.

The overall best way of handling clinical depression is with a committed effort to improving lifestyle and increasing natural exposure to light and good nutrients. Overhauling the diet and getting enough exercise will be the foundation on which the recovery can be built. Any drug treatments need to be introduced quickly to stop the patient making their own condition worse, but monitored constantly to make sure they are working. An holistic approach is always most likely to defeat clinical depression.
