Why Making A Formal Depression Diagnosis Can Be So Difficult

Depression diagnosis can be extremely difficult, especially if the depressed individual is going through a low point in their life. There are many people who can exhibit some of the symptoms of depression without actually being depressed, and these people will recover naturally in the fullness of time. There are some lifestyle changes and natural treatments which can be applied to anyone in this situation as well as someone who is genuinely depressed, because they are of benefit to any human being, and they carry no side effects.

One of the keys to making an early diagnosis of clinical depression is to notice when an individual is taking part in activities which they have normally found to be pleasurable, and is displaying indifference or even aversion. It is possible for this to happen when someone is just feeling temporarily low but in this case it is far more likely that they will simply take a break from the activity altogether. In extreme cases, the individual can exhibit a tendency for doing things which are reckless or even harmful, and that is a certain sign of a clinical problem.

Whenever you suspect an individual of being in a depressed state, there are certain behaviors to watch out for which will reinforce the condition. Withdrawing from any kind of social activity is a very common behavior, as is drug and substance abuse. These behaviors will worsen the mental and physical state of the patient and in turn make the condition worse. Unless some action is taken to break the vicious circle, the consequences can be tragic. Getting the patient outside into a natural environment is one way of breaking the circle.

The good news is that there is much you can do to treat a depressed person even before a depression diagnosis is actually made. There are activities which will benefit a person feeling temporarily bereft of life as well as one who is clinically depressed. Getting more natural light is a good starting point. If the climatic conditions are such that finding natural sunlight is not possible, you can use a light machine which has been developed for sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder. As well as increasing exposure to light, try to make sure that the patient gets enough of the essential vitamins and Omega 3 fatty acids.

If the depression diagnosis is made quickly, and it is obvious that natural remedies are only going to have a partial effect at best, then it is time to consider a course of medical treatment. The effects of drug therapy on depression are still not fully known or documented, but there have been independent trials carried out under strict laboratory conditions which have shown a definite benefit to patients taking the drug rather than a placebo. These treatments are usually for a minimum of six months following the depression diagnosis.
