Why Postpartum Depression Can Be Easier To Treat

Postpartum depression is similar in so many ways to other types of depression suffered by people for no apparent reason, but the consequences of this depression can be even more serious. Not only is there the usual threat of a depressed person harming themselves, sometimes fatally, there is also the even more important consideration of the health and welfare of the newly born child to consider. This is one form of depression where medical attention and constant supervision are more important than ever. Any treatment program worked out by a competent physician needs to be followed exactly.

At least this type of depression does have one advantage over many others, and that is that it is far easier to diagnose and find a direct cause for. While it may not be possible to get right to the exact cause of the negative feelings, it will at least be obvious that the problem is caused by the mother being pregnant and going through childbirth. This means that a program of treatment can be be devised immediately, and put into place without any waiting.

The lifestyle changes which are so beneficial to any depression sufferer are so much more so for a mother. In fact, they should have been implemented as soon as the mother's condition was known. The trouble is that it is easy to tell a pregnant mother that they should not be smoking, or that they should be getting more essential nutrients in their diet, but it is never so easy for the mother to put this into practice. Even if the mother was not able to follow a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, there is still every reason why this should be implemented now. Passive smoking, for example, can still greatly harm a developing child.

It is essential to start the treatment or postpartum depression by removing everything which is proven to be an aggravating factor of the condition. Cigarette smoking is one of these factors, and everything should be done to try to wean the sufferer off this habit. Another proven factor in aggravating this depression is feeding the baby on bottled formula instead of the natural mother's milk. Avoid this practice if you possibly can.

Once a reasonable lifestyle has been achieved, often with considerable help and supervision from the medical profession, any specific drug treatments can then be started. It is to be strongly advised that these drug treatments be avoided for as long as possible if the mother is breast feeding. Herbal alternatives can be tried, and while their effectiveness is unproven there are many who believe that they do have an effect. If the depression can be beaten with natural methods, this will be far safer for the baby, and it will be a far more satisfying victory over postpartum depression.
