How Seasonal Depression Disorder Can Be Managed And Overcome
Seasonal depression disorder can be extremely debilitating for someone who lives in a northerly climate, and who has to endure long periods of dull and lifeless weather. This is a phenomenon which has only recently been given a proper identifying name, that of Seasonal Affective Disorder. The causes are still little understood, but it appears to be an extension of the dullness felt by everyone when the climatic conditions are dull and cloudy for long periods of time. There is a link here with general depression, in that any case of depression will respond to improved lighting conditions to some degree.
Knowing when you have an actual case of Seasonal Affective Disorder and not just a simple case of feeling a bit down because of the weather is not easy. The key is to notice how you feel at times when you would not normally be affected by weather conditions. For example, when you are taking part in an indoor activity which would normally be highly satisfying to you, but which for some unknown reason feels flat this time. If the bad feeling linger, that is another sign that something is seriously wrong.
The answer to a lack of natural light seems simple enough, and in many cases it is. If you have enough natural light, and the ability to get outside, take advantage of it. Even if the weather is cold but clear, you can put on enough clothes to cope with the temperature and still gain the benefit from the prevailing light conditions. Only in rare cases where there is extended cloud cover for many days at a time will you need to do more than this.
There are times when even the ardent seeking of natural sunshine will not produce the result you are seeking, because the climatic conditions are simply too dull. In this case, artificial aids are needed to overcome the problem. The good news is that light machines have been developed which solve the problem completely in many cases. It is the brain which suffers from the lack of natural light, so replacing this light with artificial light of the same quality stimulates the brain to produce the necessary hormones.
Because the body still needs to absorb the light and use it, sufferers of seasonal depression disorder need the right nutrients in the diet to help this to happen. Following a diet which allows you to get the needed vitamins and Omega 3 acids will improve your morale, and also allow the body to synthesize and use the light you are providing. There is always a role for diet to play in beating depression, and rarely is that more pronounced than in the case of seasonal depression disorder.
