How To Deal With Severe Depression Symptoms

Severe depression symptoms can be extremely difficult to treat, for several reasons. Firstly, unlike the symptoms of many other conditions, they are not obvious to spot. A person who is not naturally outgoing can seem to be behaving quite normally when in reality they are feeling extremely depressed. Then, there is the consideration that dealing with any illness is easier when you have the right mental attitude. In depression, the very asset which you need to cope with illness is the one which is compromised. Unless you have supportive people to help you, this can lead to serious problems in administering any treatment.

There are also problems with making a formal diagnosis of depression in the first place. If an individual is going through a very difficult time in their life due to some kind of irreversible loss, they may exhibit behaviors which are consistent with depression without them actually being depressed. Often, depression can only be properly diagnosed after several months of the individual feeling this way. This can then be a problem, because many of the drug treatments which are shown to have a good success rate also need to be carried out over several months.

When the symptoms of depression become severe, the need for the individual never to be left alone increases dramatically. Suicide is a serious threat, as it accounts for three percent of the deaths of depressed people. Even if the case never reaches that stage, the patient is very likely to indulge in behaviors which will reinforce the condition and make it worse. This includes cigarette smoking and the use of other recreational drugs, and poor diet and the neglect of general health.

When severe depression symptoms reach the stage where they become a serious threat to life, as they easily can, it is time to begin a course of drug treatments. At this stage, considerations of side effects become far less important, as these side effects are going to be far easier to manage, and far less dangerous, than the disease itself. Drug treatments such as Prozac remain controversial, but independent testing has shown a dramatic improvement in the results for the drugs over the use of a placebo.

Even if the severe depression symptoms are so bad that they need drug treatments over many months, there is much to be gained by making simple lifestyle improvements. Many cases of depression can be made less severe by exposing the individual to more natural light, and by improving the diet so that substances which aggravate and reduce morale are removed, while essential minerals and vitamins are increased. In some cases, a therapy such as light therapy can lead to a profound improvement, and in any case it will be safe to try. Unless you have a very specific and accurate diagnosis, it can be worth trying any natural therapy to see if it reduces severe depression symptoms.
