How To Deal With Signs Of Depression
Signs of depression can be difficult to interpret in the first instance, largely because they are very similar to the signs which any individual can develop if they have just suffered a serious loss in their life. It can take even perfectly healthy people a long time to come out of a mental trough when they have suffered an irreversible loss. The same event can trigger depression in someone who already had an underlying proclivity to the condition, which was hidden beneath the surface just waiting to happen. This can make the treatment of symptoms difficult, as there is no definitive way to diagnose the condition.
Once an individual is behaving in a depressed way for no apparent reason, you can be sure that you are dealing with genuine depression symptoms. There are many signs to look out for, but the most important of these is a total lack of pleasure or enjoyment from the things which would normally provide this. If you know an individual well, you will know the type of things they like to do, and the things which normally give them a sense of satisfaction and pleasure. If this ceases to happen, then the condition is almost certainly clinical depression, and needs to be treated accordingly.
There are some positive steps which can be taken whether the symptoms of depressions are genuine or merely illusory, because they are steps which will benefit anyone and they carry no risk or negative side effects. Getting more fresh air and sunshine in a natural environment is one, and improving the diet is another. Make sure that the depressed individual is getting enough of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids and enough vitamins. If the temperature and the time of year makes getting outside difficult, consider using the type of light machine used by Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers. Even if you have a different condition, the improved light can still help.
Once it has become obvious that the signs of clinical depression are genuine, and that there is a serious long term problem to overcome, you can think about introducing drug treatments and other forms of supervised medical attention. Drugs such as Prozac remain controversial, and many drugs used in the treatment of depression can induce severe side effects. Be sure to keep the patient under close observation, and change the treatment if it is causing more problems than it is solving.
Even when you are using the most suitable treatment possible for the individual sufferer, you can still find that the signs of depression are slow to change. This is not a condition which is likely to experience a quick fix, unless the cause can be directly identified and then treated. Seasonal Affective Disorder is one example of a condition which can respond quickly to treatment, if the right light machine is regularly used. In other cases, it can take a long time to see a lessening of signs of depression.
