Why Teenage Depression Is Especially Difficult To Handle

Teenage depression is just one facet of a condition which is proving notoriously difficult to diagnose and then to treat. The major problem with diagnosing any case of depression is that the symptoms, at least in the initial stage, are very similar to those of a normal healthy individual going through an exceptionally rough time in their life. With teenagers, who are prone to be moody even at the best of times, it can be even harder to tell the difference. Until science has evolved to the degree where machines can give definitive readings of hormone levels, there is always going to be a degree of guesswork involved.

One of the greatest difficulties with teenage depression is that this is an age where many youths find it extremely difficult to confide in what they perceive to be authority figures. This can lead to the depression going unnoticed for longer than would normally be the case, and this can in turn mean that school performance can be severely retarded even before there is definite knowledge of the problem. It helps greatly if someone who is more trusted, possibly a more distant relative, can try to talk to the youth when there is no pressure situation to deal with.

Another problem with depression in teenagers is that they do tend to follow unhealthy lifestyle patterns which can aggravate the condition. There have been many parents of teenagers over the years who have been horrified to discover that the youths were long time users of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs, or that they were engaging in underage relations. It is easy to imagine, therefore that a depressed child will also be able to hide this from concerned parents.

Helping a teenager to overcome depression is never easy, but at least one breakthrough has been made with the recognition that this is a genuine condition which needs proper medical treatment. A positive, helpful attitude on behalf of schoolteachers and the medical profession can go a long way to at least laying the foundations which allow for a recovery. Understanding of the underlying condition, and a relieving of the constant pressure to succeed academically will also have a profound effect. Realism on behalf of parents is important here.

Even though teenage depression is a very serious condition, there is no reason why it needs to blight a young life forever. Setting realistic targets for progress, rather than expecting miracles, is a huge start. Taking the youth on trips outside to stimulate the brain is another certain way to improve matters at least to some extent. If drug treatments are necessary, it is vital to allow for possible side effects. Anyone taking drug treatments for depression is going to feel drowsy from time to time, and being aggressive during these times is going to wipe out any good the treatment could possibly achieve. Great care is needed with teenage depression.
